Salzburg Residenz

PLATIAL’26 will take place in the Toskanatrakt (Tuscany Wing) of the Salzburg Residenz, which served as the residence and representative building of the prince-archbishops over many centuries when Salzburg was one of the constituent territories of the former Holy Roman Empire.

Salzburg

Salzburg is a walkable city on the Salzach River, close to the German border and framed by the Alps. Its historic centre is defined by baroque buildings, church towers, and a long association with music and learning. Many of the features for which the city is famous such as Mozart, the cathedral, and carefully maintained façades make the city feel like the ideal image of a Central European town with an Alpine character. However, these features are also part of the city’s everyday rhythm rather than just a backdrop for visitors. For PLATIAL attendees, Salzburg offers a convenient and pleasant setting. The university, conference venues, cafés, and hotels are close to one another, making it easy to move between formal sessions and informal conversations. The city’s scale encourages chance encounters and extended discussions, whether over coffee in the old town or during a short walk along the river.

Hotels

Salzburg is a tourist destination and thus offers numerous lovely hotels. We are grateful that Salzburg Congress offers PLATIAL attendees a limited number of rooms at discounted rates. These can be accessed through the following link: https://www.salzburgcongress.at/en/Quickfinder-TOSC5/2026/qf-scplatial-en

Directions

Salzburg is well-connected both nationally but also to international destinations. Below you find directions for various modes of travel.

Air travel: Salzburg is easy to reach from two international airports. Munich International Airport is the closest major intercontinental hub. This airport is served by a train station and Deutsche Bahn/German Railways offers plenty of direct connections to Salzburg Hbf (via Munich Central/Hbf). The symposium venue is located in the old town, which is well connected with the station (a ca. 10-mins bus ride). The other option for air travel is to go via Salzburg Airport directly, which offers connections to many European destinations. In Salzburg, plenty of bus connections serve the airport connecting it to the city centre.

Arriving by train: Salzburg Hbf is well connected to many major European cities via both ÖBB/Austrian Railways and Deutsche Bahn/German Railways services. We would like to encourage you to travel by train as an alternative to a flight in the interest of environmentally friendly travel. Perhaps this could also be an option from your place?
